The businessman, working with museum director Michael Govan, is acquiring work by artists including Chris Burden and Ed Ruscha that he says he intends to donate. Nicholas Berggruen travels more in three months than most people do in a lifetime. Dubbed “the homeless billionaire” because he prefers living out of five-star hotels to owning any homes, his business and nonprofit ventures this winter alone have taken him to Singapore, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Beijing, New Delhi and Zurich, with a side trip to Antarctica.

The actors are like a Samuel Beckett dream team, performing the play at the Mark Taper Forum. On the awesomeness scale, the pairing of Alan Mandell and Barry McGovern in Samuel Beckett’s “Waiting for Godot” is off the charts, a fantasy face-off in a league with George Washington versus Abe Lincoln or giant octopus versus giant squid — even though “Godot” is not the most action-packed of the existential classics.

Ballet Preljocaj’s ‘Snow White’ dances stylishly into L.A.

For ‘Blanche Neige,’ coming to Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, Angelin Preljocaj teamed with designer Jean Paul Gaultier. It would be easy to see the U.S. premiere of Ballet Preljocaj’s avant-garde production of “Snow White” (“Blanche Neige”), with music by Mahler, costumes by fashion legend Jean Paul Gaultier and a Thierry Leproust-designed set, as an attempt to capitalize on the current fascination with the darker take on traditional fairy tales that have been cropping up on TV sets and hitting theaters across the country.

L.A. region’s arts development ambitions face uncertain future

A state law that recently abolished community redevelopment agencies has advocates pondering the future of cultural projects and their funding in L.A., Long Beach and elsewhere. On a typical recent day in L.A., art lovers were pondering the huge Jackson Pollock canvas at the Museum of Contemporary Art. Over at the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts, headliners took their bows, just as Frank Sinatra and Whitney Houston once did. Cirque du Soleil’s “Iris” was in rehearsals at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, where the Academy Awards had wrapped only a few weeks earlier.
